Series 1 consists of personal effects of Andrew P. Hill, Jr. Box I:1 contains biographical material, correspondence, and pamphlets relating to his travels and recreational interests. Box I:2 contains family and travel photographs. Series II consists of records of Hill's early employment (1920-40). Box II:1 contains materials pertaining to his tenure in San Jose City Schools (1920-27), Humboldt State College (Spring 1931), and Santa Maria Union High School District (1935-40). Box II:2 contains records of his work with California State Division of Schoolhouse Planning (1927-33). Series III consists of materials created during Hill's years as Superintendent of the Stockton Unified School District. Box III:1 contains records of the District. Box III:2 contains teaching materials Hill used in teaching summer school education courses at College of the Pacific. Box III:3 contains speeches and shorter writings. Series IV consists of major writings and printed research materials. Box IV:1 contains draft chapters of books on schoolhouse planning and school administration. Box IV:2 contains printed source materials on same topics.

Formerly a student of art, Andrew Putnam Hill became a professional photographer in 1889, opening a studio in San Jose, California with his partner, Sydney J. Yard.
